Must-dos for a delicious (and affordable) Christmas roast

A few ideas to help you make the most out of your Christmas roast budget.

Christmas is right around the corner, and we can almost smell the roast potatoes! With that in mind, we have come up with a few ideas to help you make the most out of your Christmas roast budget and enjoy a warm and delicious meal.

Sainsbury’s £20 Christmas Roast

From now through to Christmas Eve, you can head to Sainsbury’s to get all your Christmas roast essentials for less than £20, all you have to do is sign up for the Nectar card. They even have vegetarian options which come up under £17. The best part is all of the proceeds from their festive vegetables section will be donated to the Nourish the Nation programme (in partnership with Comic Relief). Not only will you be saving on a delicious meal for the whole family, but you would also be helping your community- something we value greatly at GWCU. Read more about the initiative here.

Take advantage of the Internet

There is no shortage of tools and resources on the internet that can help you whip up the most delicious Christmas dinner affordably.

We have mentioned Chat-GPT in the past to manage personal finances. This time, we are using it to plan out the perfect Christmas Roast. Simply ask Chat-GPT what you need, like a shopping list for affordable ingredients, alternatives for expensive side dishes, and anything else you may need help with.

Another great tool to use is TikTok. It is even found that 40% of young people use TikTok as a search engine. Using the search feature on TikTok, you can find a huge variety of videos that can help you come up with budget-friendly ideas for your Christmas roast. To help you get started, watch @MealsByMitch’s video on how to make a Christmas roast for 6 people for under £20.

Make it a group effort

If you are hosting Christmas this year and feeling overwhelmed by the idea of cooking for a large group, get everyone involved in the meal. A potluck is a great way to spread the cost and effort of a Christmas roast. Not only would everyone have the opportunity to show off their cooking skills and bring their dish to life, but it allows everyone more time to spend together rather than hours spent in the chaotic kitchen.

Shop smarter

Preparing for a big shop like Christmas dinner is just as important as cooking the Christmas dinner. To make sure you are getting the most out of your budget, take inventory of what ingredients you already have and only then, write out the list of ingredients you need. Once you’ve don’t that, compare prices using tools like Trolley.co.uk and My Supermarket Compare to compare prices at your nearby supermarkets.

While you are at the shops, make sure you stick to your list and try not to get distracted by the ‘limited edition’ seasonal products. And don’t forget to check the reduced section for some amazing deals.

Make your leftovers last

No matter how closely you plan, there are always a few leftovers from a Christmas dinner. To make the most out of your ingredients, here are some fun recipes to help you revamp your leftovers. You can also freeze your leftovers for the next time you’re craving a roast!
